Pisgah Area SORBA will be hosting what, with your help, could be the biggest trail workday any mountain bike club has ever done. And everyone knows if you work hard, you have to play hard; and that is certainly on the agenda.
Mark your calendars for June 6-8, 2008. Continue reading National Trails Day - Coming Up June 6th-8th…
What will Asheville do with its mandate from the people?; ‘Bike Petition’ closed.
March 4, 2008 on 7:43 pm | In W.N.C. - Road | No Comments
Where do we go from here? The “Bike Petition” has an ambitious goal of putting people back to the center of urban planning decisions. The recent Bike Plan speaks to many of the concerns addressed in city councils recent show of support for ‘people-centered planning’. Thanks to everybody that helped get this petition into the right hands. Here is the video of it being turned in at the City Council Meeting on 2/26/08.
Below is the final list of signatures by zip code. These are your servers, your doctors, your painters, your accountants, your attorneys, your babysitters, your teachers, your stockbrokers, your carpenters, your nurses & your neighbors. Here is the Finalized Asheville Bike Petition representing as many as 7300 people. (Originals are on file at Asheville City Hall.)
Considering that some of our leaders may never actually see all the hand signatures, or fully grasp it’s vision, here is a reminder of our mutual realization, as set forth by the “Asheville Bike Petition” Continue reading What will Asheville do with its mandate from the people?; ‘Bike Petition’ closed….
Asheville Approved the Transportation Master Plan
February 27, 2008 on 2:29 pm | In W.N.C. - Road | No CommentsCongratulations to everybody in Asheville, NC! Your city council voted to approve the ‘Bike Plan’. We also presented the Bike Petition (here’s the video). The only vote against the plan came from Carl Mumpower even though it was clear he could not argueagainst its vision of our community.
Thanks to (l-r) Brownie Newman, Bill Russell, Vice Mayor Jan Davis, Holly Jones & Robin Cape for restoring our faith in Asheville. Over 50 helmet clad citizens endured the proceedings.
Here is the Asheville Citizen Times Coverage of the historic vote.
Some of the other key players in making this happen are Mike Sule (Asheville on Bikes), Barb Mee (French Broad MPO), Claudia Nix (Bike Ped Task Force), Eric Krause (Bike Plan Steering Committee) & Yuri Koslen (UNCA Transportation Planner). There are dozens, even hundreds more people that played a part in this groundbreaking decision. Great Job everybody!
‘Dirt Kids’ was a hit!
February 25, 2008 on 4:39 pm | In W.N.C. - Trail, Dirt Kid's | No CommentsThe above picture says it all; our first “Dirt Kids” was a success. 10 children & their parents rode about 4 miles on our inaugural clinic. We spun out on a gravel road, then practiced crossing logs & roots. We learned how to select gears for extended climbing & how to position your body while descending. We finished the day with a nice long descent that was definately a crowd pleaser. We’ll be back on March 22nd to do it again. Check back at this blog for updates.

BioWheels has created “Dirt Kids” for the Asheville Youth Cycling program.
February 18, 2008 on 12:33 am | In W.N.C. - Trail, Dirt Kid's | 3 Comments![]()
BioWheels is offering “Dirt Kids” through the Asheville Youth Cycling program. Jon Sarver & Matt Johnson are excited to offer a monthly workshop for kids, and their parents. Both Matt & John have over 30 years of riding experience. Both are considered 1st generation (albeit late) mountain bikers & have evolved with the technology. Our goal is to help parents feel comfortable taking their children into the woods on mountain bikes. If we can help nurture some real enthusiasts, that’s a bonus. Most importantly, we will enjoy the woods & our time together.
The first 2 dates are set for Saturday, February 23rd and Saturday, March 22nd.
-
We will meet at Boyd Branch trailhead in Bent Creek @ 9am. (Go past Rice Pinnacle & Hard Times on Wesley Branch, veer right at fork onto gravel, then 1st lot on right).
-
We will not ride if precipitating, or if the trails are muddy. Check back here on Friday night for an update, if there is any question.
-
An RSVP is very important. Email mailto:mj@biowheels.com, or stop by BioWheels.
-
There is no fee. Your ‘good will’ is all we need.
-
We will finish by 1pm.

2/24/08 trail work day
February 13, 2008 on 11:14 pm | In W.N.C. - Trail | No CommentsWhere: Laurel Mountain
Why: Numerous (20-plus) tree blow-downs.
When: Meet at Yellow Gap at 10am. Leaving cars by 10:15.
Why: It has to be done. Every mountain biker should contribue one day a year to trail work- why not this one?
How: We need three crews, two with chainsaws and one advance crew with loppers. I plan on leading the advance crew, moving fast, Laurel as an out and back. So, should be a fun ride too.
What to bring: Good attitude. Bike and usual gear. Loppers if you have them.
thanks!-Mike
