Due to the large number of involved ‘Dirt Kids’ families that are attending the Lake Eden Arts Festival on May 9th-11th, Jon & I are re-scheduling ‘Dirt Kids’. We have set the date to Saturday, June 7th. We tried to do it sooner, but there are bike events every single weekend the we are already committed to.

We apologize for this, but LEAF is all about the kids, as well.

Thanks for understanding. -Matt J.

Dirt Kids 2 Group ShotOur 2nd “Dirt Kids” was fantastic. We had a few new faces. The group rode about 5 miles over about 3 hours. We practiced log crossing, stream crossing, eating & paddy-cake. Dirt Kids Play Paddy Cake

We are scheduling the next one for Saturday, May 10th. Send an email to mj@biowheels.com subject “Dirt Kids” to be added the Dirt Kids list. All kids that can ride confidently on 2 wheels are welcome.

10 kids learn to ride mountain bikes

The above picture says it all; our first “Dirt Kids” was a success.  10 children & their parents rode about 4 miles on our inaugural clinic. We spun out on a gravel road, then practiced crossing logs & roots. We learned how to select gears for extended climbing & how to position your body while descending. We finished the day with a nice long descent that was definately a crowd pleaser. We’ll be back on March 22nd to do it again. Check back at this blog for updates.

Here is a slideshow of the entire day

Asheville Youth Cycling

BioWheels is offering “Dirt Kids” through the Asheville Youth Cycling program. Jon Sarver & Matt Johnson are excited to offer a monthly workshop for kids, and their parents. Both Matt & John have over 30 years of riding experience. Both are considered 1st generation (albeit late) mountain bikers & have evolved with the technology.  Our goal is to help parents feel comfortable taking their children into the woods on mountain bikes. If we can help nurture some real enthusiasts, that’s a bonus. Most importantly, we will enjoy the woods & our time together.

The first 2 dates are set for Saturday, February 23rd and Saturday, March 22nd.

  • We will meet at Boyd Branch trailhead in Bent Creek @ 9am. (Go past Rice Pinnacle & Hard Times on Wesley Branch, veer right at fork onto gravel, then 1st lot on right).
  • We will not ride if precipitating, or if the trails are muddy. Check back here on Friday night for an update, if there is any question.
  • An RSVP is very important.  Email mailto:mj@biowheels.com, or stop by BioWheels.
  • There is no fee. Your ‘good will’ is all we need.
  • Helmet required, gloves recommended. Matt & Hyla have spent many hours in the woods.
  • We will finish by 1pm.
  • Disclaimer- Mountain biking can be challenging & potentially dangerous. Do not come if you do not understand the inherent dangers of riding a bike.
  • Download & sign this waiver before you arrive.
    Waiver for ‘Dirt Kids’ -thanks!

Important- All bikes need to brought to a bike shop for a safety check before this event, as we are not planning to spend time working on any bikes. BioWheels will provide free estimates, and 10% off basic tune-up adjustments to all participants who RSVP.
