Cincinnati - Final CORA Mitchell Memorial Trail Day Saturday May 10th!

Mitchell Memorial Forest Trail Build - 5/10/2008 at 9am

Directions: Take Rybolt Rd exit off of I-74. Turn right onto Harrison. Go a few miles, turn left onto Wesselman. Go a couple miles, turn right on Buffalo Ridge. Climb hill and turn right onto Zion. First right into park. Park vehicle at Tall Trees lot, last lot on left.

We have ~1/2 mile of trail to build and the loop will be 99.9% complete! All that will remain are the two openings going into the woods at the trail head, which we will complete on the June fine tuning trail day. But, that won’t happen unless we have a turnout in May like we did in January. There is no doubt in my mind we can do this. The majority of what is left will be only raking and clearing. Most of the 0.42 mile we did in January was bench cut. There is still quite a lot of dead fall on the route, so I’m hoping to get most of that cleared prior to the trail day.

My skin hurts! A buddy of mine used to say that the morning after a night of drinking with the boys. I kinda feel that way today. It’s two days after a mountain bike trail building day at Mitchell Memorial Park in Cincinnati. After swinging a Rhino for nearly 4 hours, my hands feel as if I spent a night hanging from a flag pole over downtown traffic gripping for dear life. For those not in the know, a Rhino is a hoe on steroids and is used for bench cutting trails by hand. If you have a non-manual labor type job, you owe yourself to swing a Rhino for a few hours to make you remember how good you have it.
I strained that little muscle on my palm at the base of my thumb, pretty sure that’s my monkey touching muscle. Afterward, a friend of mine had trouble holding onto a cup of Starbucks. We both have a bad case of woosie hand. While we both may not be able to grip a pen for the next few days, it was well worth it.
The group of 30 to 40 Cincinnati Off Road Alliance (CORA) volunteers surpassed their goal and brought the trail to where they thought they might be by the end of February. CORA is a chapter of the Ohio Mountain Bike Association (OMBA), which is a member of IMBA. Cora, Omba, Imba. Chant it three times fast. The bunch was excited at the prospect of riding the trail as soon as early summer. When completed, the 4 mile trail will be the first official mountain bike trail in Hamilton County.

Steady but sure, Cincinnati’s Scenic Bike Path marches on

Cincinnati City Council passed a measure yesterday approving the temporary extension of the Scenic Bike Path from the Lunken Airport perimeter trail towards Sawyer Point. Within two years, an idle portion of the Oasis rail line (paralleling Eastern Ave.) could see the bikeway running alongside and riders, skaters, and walkers from downtown and areas east with new opportunities.

Due to the persistence of our area’s bicycling advocates, major strides have been taken in the last three years with the extension of the same bike trail from Milford to Newtown. The temporary four mile extension will cost an estimated $1 million, and will be raised by private donations. Supporting members of city council hope this will be the first step in extending the trail to the West side and the Mill Creek Valley.

What we want to know is, who’s in charge of re-painting the mile markers every year
